Over the years, flags have carried countless meanings and forms of communication between people and the nations they belong to. They have always stood as symbols of identity and representation. Among the most notable of these flags is the Palestinian flag. Its meanings have evolved, layering with historical and emotional significance year after year especially in recent decades through its representation by artists around the world, and particularly Palestinian artists.

Each of us holds a unique and personal relationship with the flag, shaped by our backgrounds and the history of the flag, the people, and the land it represents.

At the beginning of my artistic practice and my inquiries into the flag in the realm of art, its relation to the people, art, and the Palestinian cause, I created works that mirrored the flag. I studied and explored its history, the challenges it faced, and the many meanings imposed upon it over time, including prohibition, aggression, and its reformation through various artistic expressions. I examined AnD researched over 250 artworks featuring flags, especially the Palestinian flag.

My work became a reflection of those questions and answers. The path between question and answer became the artwork itself. The process, the inquiry, and the shared dialogue became the art.

I represented the flag as an abstract symbol, stripped from all the narratives projected onto it throughout history. I reshaped it into a flag by Palestinians, for Palestinians thinking beyond the frames in which it was placed. I aimed to create a familiar, yet reimagined approach to its colors, using them in new mediums and forms.

In moments of crisis, people always return to the Palestinian flag. Recently, it has returned to the center of attention along with symbols like the watermelon taking the front lines. My connection with the flag, and with the artwork that represents it, shifts with events. Its colors have become a tool of communication between me and myself and i, me and the viewer, me and those around me, across emotions, scenes, and various states of being.

My palette has become the colors of the flag. I use gray as a neutral base, allowing the other colors to express different feelings and contexts forming a vast array of experiments and questions.
